1. except
except 是“除……之外(不包括本身在内)”的意思,指同一类事物的总体中除去一部分。例如:

2. expect for
expect for 是“除……之外”的意思,但对比的对象通常不是同一类事物。例如:
Your composition is quite good except for a few spelling mistakes. 你的作文写得非常好只是有几处拼写错误。
(composition与spelling mistakes 不属于同一类事物。)
Smith is a good man, except for his bad temper. 史密斯除了脾气不好外,是个好人。
(a good man与bad temper 不属于同一类事物。)
3. besides
besides 是“除了……之外,还有(包括本身在内)”的意思,具有肯定和附加的涵义,后接名词、动词-ing形式或代词。它与in addition to同义。例如:
She can speak Japanese besides English. 除英语外,她还会讲日语。
She can speak Japanese in addition to English. 除英语外,她还会讲日语。

① We all went to the Great Wall except him. 除他之外,我们都去了长城。(他没有去长城。)
② We all went to the Great Wall besides him. 除他之外,我们大家也都去了长城。(他也去了长城。)
